A car audio equalizer improves the sound quality of the car audio system. Equalizer can best be
described as a hi fi audio control which allows you to control the different frequency bands in an audio
system. In other words, a car audio equalizer is a tone regulator. Your car may have the best amplifier,
subwoofer, stereo and speakers but to bet the best quality sound from it you need to harmonize them. This is
where your car audio equalizer comes in.
An equalizer comprises of a number of audio filters. A filter is like a sieve which only lets some
things pass through it and blocks the rest. Similarly a car audio equalizer tunes down the undesired
frequencies to enhance the sound quality of your audio system by making it clearer. The equalizers work on
the audio frequency range which is 20 Hz to 20 K Hz. Each filter in an equalizer centers on a specific
frequency in the audio range.
Car audio equalizers are of three types the graphic equalizer, the parametric equalizer and the
quasi parametric equalizer. The graphic equalizer is pretty simple; it has user adjustable preset frequencies
which can be controlled with sliders or knobs. For example a 5 band equalizer allows you to control five
different preset frequencies through the sliders. The greater the number of bands, the more clear sound you
get.
The parametric car audio equalizer is a bit complicated and allows you to control the level of the
frequency, the frequency range as well as the primary frequency. It gives a more accurate frequency
adjustment.
The quasi parametric amplifier is the same as a parametric equalizer but with the option of
controlling the Q factor of frequencies as well. The Q is the extent the range of frequency will be affected
by.
Your car audio equalizer must be fine tuned only once and not every time you insert a CD. Pioneer,
Sony, Eclipse are some manufacturers of car audio equalizers.
